About the Social Security Number
The Social Security Number (NISS) is a unique identifier assigned by Portuguese Social Security to each beneficiary.
It consists of 11 digits:
- The first digit is usually 1 or 2, indicating the type of beneficiary
- The next 9 digits form a sequential number
- The final digit is a check digit, calculated using a specific validation algorithm
